Artist: Gorillaz
Album Title: Cracker Island (Deluxe Edition)
As a bit of a Gorillaz fan, I was well prepared to listen and review the band’s newest album, Cracker Island. Though this album is not a follow-up to their last album Song Machine, Season One, I was nevertheless excited for what the quirky cast of virtual band members (and the mind of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett) had cooked up. A couple singles were rolled out to drum up hype for the album over the last year, and though none of them were particularly impressive, they were alright and I remained cautiously optimistic.
Now that I’ve sat through both the standard edition and the deluxe edition that released a couple days later, the word that comes to mind is underwhelming. Though not bad by any means, the album never really does anything new or creative. The album has a nice mellow, airy feel to it that makes it perfect to be background music whilst you focus on another task, and is unafraid to get a little goofy at time, such as the track Captain Chicken clearly being somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but otherwise Cracker Island never steps into unfamiliar, or even interesting territory.
My only final thought is that I remain optimistic for Song Machine: Season Two.
Best Track(s): “Silent Running”, “Captain Chicken”
