Artist: Lemon Twigs
Album Title: Everything Harmony
Unlike most of the albums I have reviewed so far, I was completely unfamiliar with Lemon Twigs prior to Everything Harmony, and it was really only until the annual barrage of end-of-year lists began rolling in did I even hear about this album and the artist. Though I still know nothing about the Lemon Twigs aside from the fact that they are a pair of brothers, I now also know that they make pretty great revivalist rock.
Everything Harmony sounds like a classic soft rock album released in the 70s who’s tracks your parents know by heart, which is also helped by how catchy each track is. Every track is practically seeping with nostalgia from the cover to its guitar solos, beautifully harmonized vocals, and melodramatically earnest lyrics. Unfortunately, that also means that some of it ends up feeling a bit same-y – sometimes it feels like the same two songs over and over again, but it’s a nice song so I don’t really mind. The Lemon Twigs wear their musical and aesthetic influences on their sleeve, and though this could come off as being overly safe or reliant on tried and true sounds, what makes Everything Harmony better is that they seem to have a genuine appreciation for the time period it draws inspiration from. And well – the music is actually enjoyable.
I could see them getting very pigeon-holed into making retro 70s soft rock where things get old quick, or go on to emulate music from different eras which they could get some good mileage out of emulating various kinds of music from the era. It all feels a little lacking in originality, even though I acknowledge authenticity isn’t easy to emulate – but seeing how the biggest rock act now is Coldplay? Well, I can’t say I mind some more good ol’ 70s rock. Either ways, I do look forward to hearing more from the group and see where (or, more accurately, when) they decide to take their sound to.
